Topic 13 introduces principles of client medication education and the importance of documentation of the instructions provided and client/caregiver response. Students will be able to discuss the necessary elements of medication instruction, including purpose or indication; review of dose, route, frequency, and duration of use; side effects, when to seek medical attention, and signs of overdose; home safety precautions; safe disposal of unused medication; client/caregiver understanding of the information provided/teach-back; and documentation of education and handouts or other materials provided and client’s understanding of the

teaching.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss factors that affect the nurse’s ability to provide client education about the use of medications.
  2. Determine strategies for educating clients about their medications.
  3. Relate components of the nursing process to client education.
  4. Identify the key elements of documentation related to client and caregiver medication education.
