In Topic 14, students are introduced to drug classifications for the endocrine system, including mechanism of action, indications for use, and major adverse effects. Medication treatment for conditions like hypothyroidism, hypo/hypercalcemia, adrenal insufficiency, and diabetes will be discussed. In this topic, students will cover thyroid/parathyroid agents, adrenal agents, and antidiabetic drugs.
Objectives:
- Discuss the mechanism of action, indications for use, and major adverse effects of selected drugs that affect the endocrine system.
- Discuss the role of alternative and complementary therapies for conditions of the endocrine system.
- Identify client-related factors that influence the effects of drugs that affect the endocrine system.
- Use the nursing process to determine safe care for a client who is receiving medications that affect the endocrine system.
