In Topic 4, students are introduced to drug classifications for body systems that are controlled by the autonomic nervous systems. Components include mechanism of action, indications for use, and major adverse effects. Students will need to review the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems to begin a foundational knowledge of medications that work by stimulating or blocking receptor sites to exert medication effects in the body.
Objectives:
- Discuss the mechanism of action, indications for use, and major adverse effects of selected drugs that affect adrenergic and cholinergic receptors of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
- Discuss interactions of alternative and complementary therapies with medications that affect adrenergic and cholinergic receptors of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
- Identify client-related factors that influence the effects of medications that affect adrenergic and cholinergic receptors of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
- Use the nursing process to determine safe care for a client receiving medications that affect adrenergic and cholinergic receptors of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
