This topic examines different types of seizures. How do you recognize them and provide safety and teaching? What medications are important? You will complete the NIHSS stroke assignment and compare the different kinds of strokes (CVA): embolic, hemorrhagic, and thrombotic. What is a TIA? Although these are acute, you will care for clients who have had strokes and have chronic residuals from them. How do you care for them?
Objectives:
- Incorporate pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic studies related to seizure disorders and stroke.
- Collaborate with interprofessional partners to develop a comprehensive plan of care for persons across the adult life span with seizure disorders, as well as prevention and detection of stroke and poststroke care.
- Apply the nursing process to plan, prioritize, and implement evidence-based, person-centered, quality nursing management of adults with seizure disorders, prevention, and detection of stroke and poststroke care, including the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, ongoing assessment, age-related or diversity considerations, restorative care, medication education, self-care strategies, and follow-up care for any health setting.
- Build on previous knowledge to make use of medication classification, mechanism of action, indications for use, calculations, nursing considerations, major adverse effects, and evaluation of therapeutic effectiveness of selected medications used in the treatment of adults with seizure disorders and stroke.
- Evaluate outcomes of care, including medications, self-care effectiveness, and recognition of potential complications.
