NSG 322: Topic 13: Eating and Feeding Disorders / NSG 322: Behavioral Health Nursing

 

In this topic, you will learn about abnormal behaviors and pathophysiological changes that can occur in clients with eating disorders and feeding disorders. This topic includes discussion of underlying factors contributing to development of disordered eating and the physical and emotional alterations experienced by clients experiencing these disorders. You will learn to differentiate between anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder and how to prioritize care for these clients. Select feeding disorders of childhood will also be discussed.

Objectives:

  1. Examine the psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual influences; signs and symptoms; age-related considerations; diagnostic studies; and evidence-based assessments related to eating and feeding disorders across the life span.
  2. Utilize the nursing process to develop, implement, and evaluate a client-centered plan of care for clients’ eating disorders.
  3. Implement evidence-based milieu management strategies that support the safety, physical, and emotional needs of clients with eating disorders.
  4. Discuss the classifications, therapeutic effects, major adverse effects, client and family teaching, and nursing considerations of select medications used in the treatment of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.
  5. Utilize effective therapeutic communication with clients who have disordered patterns of eating.
  6. Recognize the collaborative nature required to provide safe care for clients receiving treatment for eating disorders, including the roles of medical provider, dietician, nutritionist, nurse, and therapy provider.
