In this topic, while building on previously learned concepts, you will be introduced to sleep-wake disorders that are experienced by clients across the life span. The genetic, biological, and psychological factors surrounding sleep and sleep disturbances will be discussed. Disorders and conditions discussed in this topic include insomnia disorder, narcolepsy, sleep apnea disorders, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep arousal, nightmare, and sleep behavior disorders, and restless legs syndrome. You will also learn about pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions for maintaining effective sleep patterns and treating disorders related to
sleep.
Objectives:
- Examine the physiological, environmental, and psychological factors; psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual influences; signs and symptoms; age-related considerations; diagnostic studies; and evidence-based assessments related to disruptions of sleep across the life span.
- Utilize the nursing process to develop, implement, and evaluate a client-centered plan of care for clients experiencing disruptions or alterations of sleep.
- Understand the evidence-based non-pharmacological techniques used to promote effective sleep patterns and improve sleep hygiene.
- Discuss the classifications, therapeutic effects, major adverse effects, client and family teaching, and nursing considerations of selected medications used in the treatment of insomnia disorder, narcolepsy, and restless legs syndrome.
