The release of a significant volume of water down a slope has the potential to cause uncontrolled mass movements, such as shallow slides and debris flows, to occur as a consequence. It is possible that the slope’s structural integrity and stability may be jeopardised as a consequence of this uncontrolled movement of material. Several variables, including underlying geological problems and changes in slope angle, may contribute to the potential of a slope to collapse.
Throughout this part, you will learn about the extensive research, methods, and risk assessments that have been conducted so far in order to determine how heavy rains caused by climate change affect slopes and how they may be avoided if they are foreseen in advance. For the purpose of determining whether or not slopes exist in the terrain in Melbourne’s high-rainfall regions, a mix of scientific and subjective techniques will be utilised to assess the terrain. Academic institutions in Australia and across the world have been accumulating data to help researchers in comprehending the changing environment. Each decade since 1850 has been warmer than the preceding one. It was one of the hottest 30 years on record in the Northern Hemisphere’s 1400-year history. Variations in severe weather and climate have been observed since 1950. Several of these changes have been attributed to human activity, including a reduction in cold temperature extremes and an increase in warm temperature extremes, as well as an increase in certain areas’ heavy rain events.
Problem statement
To ensure geotechnical engineering’s long-term sustainability, it is essential to modify current methods and develop new ones. According to recent media reports, academics are examining techniques for preserving “reliability” in the face of unexpected circumstances as a possible alternative to more conventional “factor of safety” concepts. As a consequence of current geological and geomorphological research[1, 2], more precise geotechnical designs have been created. A major objective should be to avoid slope collapses at all costs, despite the fact that, as previously stated, climate change is expected to increase the frequency of such collapses significantly in the not-too-distant future.
Research Questions
The overall issue for this research is, ‘How can climate change impacts such as increasing rainfall affect a soil’s moisture content and slope stability?’ To lead this project through the research and solution development stages and towards this particular subject, more comprehensive and specific research questions must be investigated and answered in a systematic manner. To begin, broad ideas should be examined in detail to get a better understanding of the root cause of the issue. Climate change and its effect on the amount of rainfall are addressed in this project. This is followed by inquiries about the ‘impact,’ its significance, and how it could be found. These topics examine how a soil’s moisture content may degrade its strength and result in slope collapses.
Finally, questions to elicit solutions that result in a satisfactory conclusion. These issues examine existing solutions for improving soil strength and techniques for stabilising slopes, as well as the possibility for developing novel ones. ➢ What is the optimum slope angle? Is there a prefered soil type or combination of soil and additional elements, such as aggregates?
➢ Which option is the most efficient in terms of cost, applicability, and effectiveness?
