Respond to classmate 1:
Hi all,
Per our reading and life experiences, communication is a huge factor into the success of a project and a business. Three skills a project manager should have to do this well is to be organized, flexible, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Its important to be able to communicate clear, concise and in a way that is digestible for your audience. It is important to be able to not have just one general way of communicating and catering to certain people to make sure it is not offensive and/or the communication style is not confusing to them.
In the work remote world, we live in now a days, it opens the possibility for companies to hire employees from any where in the world. This opens the likely hood of working with team members from multiple different cultural backgrounds and personalities more likely. It is important for PMs to have a global mindset when communicating to be aware of different culture customs. Certain things or ways of communicating can be offensive to some people/cultures, and non-offensive to others.
Project managers should improve their communications skills by working with different personality types / team members with varies cultural backgrounds to get experience in different ways of communicating. They can also adopt the practice of creating communication plans for their projects. Finally, they can help close any communication gaps, especially those around business benefits. According to The Essential role of Communication article we read, “PMO directors and senior project leaders need to take ownership and better communicate the strategic and business benefits of projects to those responsible for their implementation. When the gap is closed, projects are more successful.” (PMI, 2013).

Respond to classmate 2:
I believe that a project manager needs to be able to comprehend the vital importance of communications in the overall success of projects. PMI (2013) states “55 percent of project managers agree that effective communication to all stakeholders is the most critical success factor in project management.” (p. 3) I believe that project managers should have the ability of being facilitators because they should be able to actively listen and filter information as needed to identify stakeholders. Project managers should also be able to retain feedback and respect team members’ different opinions. In conclusion, I believe being a facilitator, asking for feedback and respecting others would be three communication skills for project managers.
Effective communications with a global mindset is important in today’s environment because due to technological advances and effects of globalization, communication practices are evolving faster than ever. Due to the complexity and the competitiveness of project management in today’s environment, having a global mindset as a project manager can advance a project forward with new methods and techniques.
Finally, project managers can continue to improve their communication skills throughout their career by asking for honest feedback from peers and by implementing the correct communication strategies to each project, understanding that each project team is unique. Joubert (2020) shares tips for effective communication for project managers “Make use of technology, keep cultural and language barriers in mind, and understand who should get what information and how.”
