What Should be Included in Rehabilitation Plan?
Evolution Physiotherapy provides services for a wide variety of reasons and conditions. These most often include pain, injury prevention, and restoration of function (following injury, surgery, lack of use, or for unknown reasons).
There are many things we need to improve as rehabilitation providers. One of the most important is the unique rehabilitation plan for each of our clients. The plan needs to be unique, because every client we see is a unique individual.
To achieve a successful outcome, the treatment plan should do the following:
- address your individual goals
- address your clinical assessment findings, including pain and any structural (e.g. tissue injury), or functional (mobility, stability, motor control) deficiencies that exist
- Measure objective outcomes to determine the effectiveness of the plan
- identify treatment options, and include alternative strategies if the treatment is not effective
The rehabilitation plan should be developed and carried out by the physiotherapist in partnership with the client. While all treatment plans are unique, they should include the following specific components:
- A strong educational component. This is one of the most undervalued, but important aspects of physiotherapy treatment.
- Self management strategies (what you should and shouldn’t do, and why). It should include as many things as possible that you can do to help yourself.
- Strategies to address barriers to behaviour change (to improve the effectiveness of the plan)
- An exercise component. The exercise component will need to be progress or regress appropriately. Further, even a small exercise component (5 minutes per day) can have beneficial effects.
- When possible, provide timeframes and criteria for plan completion.
If you are not happy with or do not understand your rehabilitation plan, we encourage you to please discuss it with your physiotherapist.
