Exercise 4.5 – Practicing the Writing Process
Part 1.
Prepare a planning sheet for a letter to be sent to a key public of your choice as part of a campaign to increase membership in a neighborhood Scout troop or similar organization.
Part 2.
Do whatever research is necessary to obtain information for this writing project. Perhaps your instructor or another student will play the role of the information source to provide you with needed information. Then develop a graphic organizer to outline the various elements or sections you want to include in your writing.
Part 3.
Type a draft of this letter. Aim for about 200 words. Then review your objectives and reconsider what you wrote in the first draft. Pay particular attention to your earlier analysis of the key public and the organization’s objectives. Based on your review of the planning sheet, handwrite your revisions on your first draft. Read this draft aloud, and pay close attention to polishing the language. Handwrite your revisions for polishing the language. Then transfer the handwritten changes onto your computer and print out a second draft.
Part 4.
Mark copy editing changes on this draft as you edit it for details such as spelling, punctuation, grammar and AP style. Then make the handwritten polishing and editing changes on your computer or word processor and print out a final version.
Reminder:
You will turn in five pages for this assignment: a planning sheet, a graphic organizer, a first draft with handwritten revisions and a second draft with handwritten polishing and copy editing, and the final version.
