Corrections is a complex and evolving field, with many challenges and opportunities for growth. For this assignment, you will conduct a video scavenger hunt to explore key issues in institutional corrections, and then create a paper that briefly covers your research. Your task is to find, watch, and cite video clips (from sources such as news outlets, YouTube, blogs, or social media platforms) on all of the following topics:
Prison or jail safety
Prison or jail offender management (e.g., housing, feeding, rehabilitating)
Prison or jail overcrowding
Negative consequences of soft-on-crime public policies
The importance of public safety when making correctional policy decisions
Prison staffing shortages
Correctional spending priorities when budgets are tight
Meeting the inmates’ needs (choose one: physical, psychological, vocational, or spiritual)
Improving recidivism rates
Assignment Instructions
1. Find a Video for Each Topic
Search for and select a video clip that addresses each of the nine topics listed. Your videos can come from any reputable source, but they must provide meaningful insights into the topic.
2. Write One Paragraph Per Topic
For EACH video, write a short paragraph (typically three to five sentences) explaining:
What you learned from the video.
Why this topic is important in the field of corrections.
3. Craft a Solid Introduction and a Robust Conclusion
After completing your nine paragraphs, write an introduction that grabs the reader’s attention, as well as a comprehensive conclusion that ties all the topics together. In your introduction, be sure to include a thesis statement. In your conclusion, respond to the following:
Assess the current state of the corrections field based on the videos you reviewed.
Offer recommendations for either staying the course or making changes to improve correctional policies and practices. Be as specific as you can, using your course textbook and materials as support. You will need to refer to at least two outside resources for your support, and you can use your course materials as those resources.
4. Submission Requirements
Your paper should be submitted as a single document, following proper APA formatting.
Include the title and source of each video in the relevant paragraph. You will also need to provide the proper APA citation on the reference page for each video.
You will want to create a paper no longer than five pages. It should include at least nine paragraphs (one for each topic), an introduction, and a concluding section, which may require multiple paragraphs
