In this project, you will play the role of a statistician hired to analyze employee data for a company. First, you will access employee records and find measures of central tendency and variability for two departments within the company. You will incorporate box-and-whisker plots into the summary of your findings and help the owner of the company interpret them. You will find the data in a spreadsheet. You do not have to calculate statistics by hand; you can use your graphing calculator or the spreadsheet’s calculation features. Then you will use a sampling method to select a group of employees who will take a test to assess their computer skills. You will make a frequency table and histogram of this data. Finally, you will use technology to draw scatter plots and display trend lines for employee data and you will discuss correlations for different pairs of data Schedule of Completion

Project Instructions
Before beginning, read through the Project Overview to understand the entire project. Also, each day, make sure to read each section thoroughly before completing your assignment.
Template
Download the Project Template and rename the file as CompanyData_YourName. This file will become your presentation.
Group Comparisons
The owner wants you to find and compare data for full-time employees in the sales department and full-time employees in the advertising department.
Find the necessary employee data in the Excel spreadsheet titled Company Data. Download and open the spreadsheet, which lists data for all full-time employees. Employees 001 through 014 are all the employees in the sales department and employees 045 through 062 are all the employees in the advertising department.
Find and compare the mean salaries and mean ages of the employees in the sales and advertising departments. Use a graphing calculator or the spreadsheet’s calculation features to complete your calculations. Explain to the owner how these values could be misleading.
Find and compare the standard deviations of the salaries and ages of the employees in the sales and advertising departments. Tell how you would you explain the meaning of these values when you present them to the owner.
Create side-by-side box-and-whisker plots for the salaries of the employees for both departments (using one number line). Create another pair of side-by-side box-and-whisker plots for the ages of the employees for both departments (using one number line). Tell how you would you interpret these box-and-whisker plots when you present them to the owner.

Samples and Histograms
The company owner wants to determine whether the cost of a certain computer training program is worthwhile. Employees often are not able to effectively judge their own computer skills, so the owner wants to test the employees. It would be too costly and time consuming to test all 177 employees; therefore, only a sample of the employees will be tested. You will simulate the results of the computer skills test and will display the employee’s test scores in a frequency table and histogram.
The Company Data Excel file lists the employee numbers of all 177 employees in the company (Employee 001 through Employee 177). You must select a sample of 25 to 30 employees. Describe the type of sampling method that you will use and explain why you chose that method. Then use your method to select the group. List the employee numbers of the employees in your test group.
You will now simulate testing the employees that you chose in Problem 1. Open the Company Data Excel sheet. Highlight columns C and E and select Format > Column > Unhide. Obtain the scores of each employee who took the test by selecting the corresponding cell in column D and removing the shading from that cell. List the scores as you obtain them. Possible scores range from 1 to 20. Create a frequency table of the scores. Use the scores to make a histogram. Explain how you would interpret the histogram to the owner.

Scatter Plots
Now you will use technology to draw scatter plots and trend lines for employee data.
Open the Company Data Excel file. Create a scatter plot for the data in columns B and C.
Tell how you would describe to the owner the correlation between salary and age.
Open a new spreadsheet, or insert a new worksheet in your Company Data File.
List the salaries and computer scores of the employees who took the test in two columns in the spreadsheet. Select the data and create a scatter plot. Draw a trend line and display the equation of the trend line. Copy the scatter plot and trend line to the Salary and Computer Skills slide in your presentation.
List the ages and computer scores of the employees who took the test in two columns in the spreadsheet. Select the data and create a scatter plot. Draw a trend line and display the equation of the trend line. Copy the scatter plot and trend line to the Age and Computer Skills slide in your presentation.

Make Data-Based Predictions
It’s time to complete your final statistics task for the company owner. You will analyze bivariate data by interpreting the scatter plots and trend lines you have made.
On the Make Data-Based Predictions slide, tell how you would describe to the owner the correlation between salaries and computer skills test scores. Give an example of using the trend line to make a prediction.
