PSS221 Urban Security and Resilience Group-Based Assignment: Developing Innovative Security Strategies for Enhancing Urban Resilience in [Bangkok/Manila/Yangon]

Group-Based Assignment July 2025 Presentation

Question 1

You are an urban planning associate and your team has been assigned to develop an innovative urban security strategy that addresses contemporary security-related challenges in Bangkok, Manila or Yangon. You will prepare a PowerPoint presentation of your plan, along with your written report. See formatting instructions below.

(a) Analyse the context of your chosen city based on your choice of urban resiliency framework. This should include various aspects of the urban environment such as physical location, population dynamics, governance, and social and economic factors that you consider pertinent.

(20 marks)

(b) Examine FIVE (5) general security challenges (threats and vulnerabilities) in your chosen city. These should include all the elements that you feel are pertinent, such as crime patterns and hotspots, infrastructure security, environmental security, health security, and others that you assess as important to discuss. Provide an in-depth appraisal of how each of these
challenges is being managed.

(30 marks)

(c) Based on the identified challenges, formulate FOUR (4) potential solutions to enhance urban security and resilience by addressing some of the gaps that have not been addressed in existing measures.

(20 marks)

Format for Report (Q1a, Q1b, Q1c)

  • Your responses should be well-researched and well-articulated.
  • Use at least FOUR academic sources other than the Study Guide.
  • If AI sources are utilised, ensure proper citations and references are included.
  • The GBA cover page should be included as the first page of your report.

(d) Video Presentation Component

(i) Presentation slides

  • The PowerPoint slides used in your video presentation should include:
o A cover slide with the details of the group members
o A slide at the end with a list of references / bibliography consulted
  • Note: Your presentation should not exceed 20 slides (excluding the cover
    and bibliography slides).
  • The slides and transcript should ensure robust in-text citations;
paraphrasing material from resources still requires in-text citations to
acknowledge the source from which it was paraphrased.
  • Images (with credits to the original sources) and visualisation aids (e.g.
charts, tables, diagrams) should be included in the PowerPoint slides.

(15 marks)

(ii) Video Presentation

  • You should submit a video presentation in a recorded format. You may use mp4, Zoom recording or any other common video format.
  • All members of the group should take turns to speak in the presentation
and should be visible to the audience.
  • The maximum duration of the presentation should be 15 minutes.
  • Your presentation skills will be scored in this portion. You are expected to
present naturally and not read directly from your slides, speaking points, or
    cue cards.
  • All content must be original work. Do not use AI to generate your scripts.

Submission

It is strongly recommended that you make an early submission to check the originality report and, if necessary, make amendments to your document for resubmission. Note that the Turnitin report is usually generated immediately after the first submission, however, subsequent reports may take up to one day to generate. Do note that Turnitin will not accept any further submissions AFTER the cut-off time. There is a 12-hour grace period after the cut-off time, which is not an extended deadline but solely meant for solving any technical
problems that you may encounter while attempting to make a submission before the cut-off time. Please email Canvas Support immediately (with relevant screenshots and your GBA attached) and follow up with Canvas Support first thing in the morning to ensure that the problem is resolved before the grace period is over.

One late submission is allowed only if no prior submissions were made before the cut-off time. Do note that the Canvas system will automatically deduct penalty marks for every day that your assignment is late. With this automatic deduction, there will be no need to request for extensions from your tutor because your tutor does not have the mandate to over-ride the Canvas system settings. You will need to form your own judgement as to how many marks
you are willing to forego for each extra day that you gain to work on your assignment.

Take care to ensure that you upload the correct GBA document to the correct folder of the correct course. Requests to transfer incorrectly uploaded documents to the correct folder will require an official appeal (and an administrative fee).

Backup your assignment at all times. Once you have uploaded your assignment (in Word document format only), retain the Turnitin digital receipt as evidence of a successful submission. View your submission to ensure that the entire document has been uploaded successfully.

Plagiarism and Collusion

The assignment is to be completed on your own. Do not share your notes, draft or final GBA with anyone before the marked GBAs are returned to you.
Avoid plagiarism by giving yourself sufficient time to research and understand the material so that you can write up your assignment in your own words. Quotations should be used sparingly. Simply citing the source of ‘copied’ chunks of text does not excuse it from plagiarism. Do ensure that any paraphrasing is done appropriately, even if you use text from your own work that you have submitted as part of another assignment for the same or another course.

The University takes a very serious view of plagiarism (passing off someone else’s ideas as your own, or recycling of contents from your own earlier marked assignment from the same course or another course) and collusion (submitting an assignment which is the same or very similar to another student’s). Both are very serious academic offences. Please refer to the Student Handbook on the penalties of plagiarism or collusion. You are strongly advised to submit your assignment early, check the plagiarism report yourself, and if needed revise and resubmit your assignment before the submission deadline.
