1. Portfolio: Learning and Reflective (L&R) Journal, worth 30% of the overall course mark.
You will be required to keep a weekly Learning and Reflective Journal. This component of the course is designed to encourage you to summarise what you learn each week and to reflect on how the material and skills you are learning influences your understanding of psychology. In reflective writing you have a conversation with yourself in which you are carefully thinking about, or reflecting on a particular topic or experience. When you write reflectively you’re expected to write about your thoughts, feelings or experiences about a certain topic, relate this to evidence and then consider how you can apply this learning and evidence to yourself and your future practice. Self-reflection and reflective practice are core skills for mental health practitioners. People who do not critique their own understanding, learning and performance regularly are shaped by their values, preferences and perspectives and will not become truly aware of their own strengths and weaknesses. Working as a mental health practitioner often challenges our values and beliefs; and in order to truly connect and help those we work with it is important to be able to critically reflect on ourselves, our practice and the practice of the organisation we work in. The L&R aims to provide you with opportunities to practice your self-reflection and reflective skills.
There are two Learning and Reflective Journals. Each L&R should be 1000 words (plus/minus 10%). It should be structured as follows: For Weeks 2 to 5 inclusive you are to write approximately half a page with summaries of the key learning points (what you learned) from the lab for each week. You then write a one page reflection of those weeks in total (not half to one page reflection for each week). The second Learning and Reflective Journal will cover Weeks 7 to 10 and has the same structure. Both of your L&R Journals will be marked and contribute 15% each to your final mark in the course.
Your summaries of key learning points (what you learned) are brief dot-point explanations of what you have learned during the labs, why it was interesting and/or important. Typically you would include 3-5 learning points. An example of a learning point could be;
“The APS, or the Australian Psychological Society is the largest professional psychological organisation in Australia. They provide help and support to all their members and promote the importance of psychological health of all Australians”.
Your reflections are your thoughts about the content for each week as it relates to you, your aspirations and your understanding and typically includes three components ‘what’, ‘so what’ and ‘now what’. For example, you might consider questions such as; ‘What important things have I learnt, why are they important to me or to the profession, what are the implications of what I learnt for me?’
For example; “I thought all psychologists had a couch in their office and that they did Freudian therapy. However, I have now learnt that psychologists can work in very diverse roles such as doing assessments and diagnostic work or doing group work with people in prisons. In addition, psychologists are hired in very different settings including the Australian Defense Force or in the Local Area Health District. This insight into the profession is important for me because it provides me with a better understanding of the opportunities that I will have in the workplace and my perspective on the skills required to become a psychologist have changed. This wider perspective of the profession has piqued my interest in the variety of topics that we are covering in other courses, knowing that it is likely to impact my professional competencies. 2. Essay: worth 30% of the overall course mark
This essay will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the ethical and legal principles that guide Psychologists to ethical professional conduct and apply ethical decision making processes using an ethical scenario. Ethical decision making is a core skill in the profession of psychology and it is a skill that we have been practicing in the lab component of the current course. There are many different models that can be applied to ethical decision making. For this essay, it is less important which model you use instead the focus is on practicing the skills you have learnt in the labs using a systematic approach.
Using the ethical dilemma supplied on Blackboard we are asking you to write an essay where you;
Outline the importance of ethical decision making and the need for specialised codes of conduct in Psychology, and using these provide an ethical analysis of the dilemma.
This essay consists of three parts, make sure that you address each section.
1. In the first section you can describe why ethical decision making is important, including e.g., what guides ethical decision making, models that describe how we make ethical (or not so ethical) decisions in our professional lives and what can happen if we don’t abide by ethics. Don’t forget to provide evidence that support your position (using preferably peer reviewed journal articles but edited academic books can also be a good resource)
2. Next, you are asked to argue for why Psychology needs specific ethical considerations and how the codes and guidelines have been designed to help professionals act ethically.
3. Finally, you have been asked to undertake an ethical analysis as we have been preparing you for in the labs.
- Identify the ethical issues in the dilemma.
- Discuss the implications of the dilemma for those involved.
- Try to identify right and wrong actions for each of the persons involved and discuss alternative courses of actions that may be taken and determine the likely consequences of each proposed action.
- Evaluate the arguments for each option
- Discuss what does the law say? What do the guidelines say?
- What are the moral and ethical principles involved?
- Decide which of the identified options you would recommend or judge to be the ethically best way to deal with the issue presented in this case based upon which option has the strongest ethical reasons behind it.
- Determine how a critic of your position might try to argue against it using other ethical reasons, and present a rebuttal or counter-argument in defence of your judgment.
