Information about this assessment
In this assessment you are required to make one app only, and you are allowed to make the app as you please so long as you follow the basic outline. Importantly, 80% of the marks (36 marks) have bene allocated for building a very simple app, without interactivity or generalized functions, while the remaining 20% (9 marks) has been allocated for more sophisticated apps (described below).
Regarding submission
You must build all your app in a single HTML file (internal CSS and JavaScript), and cut and paste all the code form your final app over the top of the code provided in the box below. The code provided in the box below comes straight from the in class activity and will be explained in detail below.
Provided code and data
You have been provided with the HTML boiler-plate code, the data and the “weightedAve” function to calculate the weighted averages. Thus, to this you must add the relevant functions to pull out and summarise the data and plot it correctly (just like in class in week 12).
App description
All you need to do to pass is create at least three plots (you can create more), this is why the HTML code has three
tags, one plot goes in each (you can add more). The plots can be any type and any variables, so long as they are: (i) not the same ones from class (see exercise week 12 to remind yourself); (ii) each plot should include at least one outcome variable compared by at least one grouping variable (in class we made a plot of SBP by two grouping variables – gender and age); and (ii) accurately represent the data (are correct!). More marks will be awarded for making your app interactive (see mark allocation for more information).
Mark allocation
36 marks – for making the basic app where all the inputs are linked up to the correct parts of the server, which in turn creates the correct output. Most marks here are for just making accurate plots, but marks will also be awarded for using interesting charts and combinations of variables (i.e., more than one grouping variable and something other than bar chart).
6 marks – for making the app interactive, so that the user can select something or click on something and the plot they want will be generated. For example, you may have only one plot on your page, but the user can decide which group and outcome variables it uses (this is multiple plots in one). Or you might have a bunch of plots where the group doesn’t change but the outcome does. It’s up to you.
3 marks – A few of these marks will also be allocated for making an effort to package your programming statements in re-usable functions rather than cutting and pasting like we did in class (don’t go overboard, one or two examples to demonstrate you can do it is enough).
