The purpose of this rough draft, like any of the rough drafts for the essays, is to get your ideas down on paper. It is during this process that you will synthesize (bring together) your unique thoughts with those of that you discovered during your research. Putting the research paper together can be “messy”; that is, you may find yourself frustrated at times. Remember that this is normal, for synthesizing information is one of the most difficult tasks that students undertake in their college careers. You will want to have the following items with you when you undertake the writing of the rough draft:
Three level outline
Your research notes
Your research sources
While this task may seem intimidating, please keep in mind that you have already completed much of the work, such as your research notes. Some students make the mistake of not writing enough for this assignment because they do not realize that “rough draft” refers to basic composition of content—not abbreviated length. The length of your rough draft should be comparable to the length of the finished product; points will be deducted for rough drafts that do not meet the length requirement.
