Assessment 2 – Part 1
Learning Outcome: 3
Weighting: 10% towards the final marks
Learning Outcomes:
On the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
– Understand and appraise sustainable land use and appropriate remedial measures for both rural and town construction sites
Aim of this Assessment:
To create a research proposal for land use change and its effects on urban catchment hydrology
Tasks:
to produce a research proposal based on one of the challenges in the reading provided.
Hand In:
The report must be typed and converted to PDF before uploading to Moodle
1) Read the following article on Moodle (or online)
Impacts of urbanization on hydrological and water quality dynamics, and urban water management: a review
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/02626667.2015.1128084
2) For the challenges in section 6, choose one and create a research proposal where you will try and contribute to the knowledge in one of those areas.
You should use a New Zealand urban environment as a setting for this research. Use the following section titles (in bold) to help structure your proposal.
Project title (1)
One concise name (e.g., Impact of Urbanization on the hydrology of Wairoa River, Tauranga)
Project problem (4)
In a paragraph explain the research problem outlining what you are trying to achieve. What benefit will be solving this problem have to engineers and hydrologists.
(Ensure it relates to a hypothetical problem)
Background to the problem (10)
Outline at least FIVE main principles from the reading that relate to your problem. From this, identify and describe how this will fit to your area.
(Be clear relating main principles to “your” area).
Propose methodology to be undertaken (10)
Explain what data is needed to answer your project problem and how you will get this data. Identify any resources you will need for the project.
Explain what you will need to find out more about (professional development, new learnings)
Ethics, project limitations (5)
State any limitations to the project.
Are there any ethical principles to consider? (Code of ethics?)
Assume you have a reasonable budget, time and access to equipment if you had to carry out the investigation.
Assessment 2 – Part 2
Due: May 20th
Learning Outcome: 3
Weighting: 10% towards the final marks
Learning Outcomes:
On the successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
– Understand and appraise sustainable land use and appropriate remedial measures for both rural and town construction sites
Aim of this Assessment:
To create an erosion and sediment control plan for the construction of a carpark.
Task:
To complete a sediment and erosion control plan using the information provided for the development of a subdivision. You may not be able to provide all details, but you should be able to use the universal sediment loss equation as well as choose appropriate sediment and control options for the development.
Hand In:
The report must be typed and converted to PDF before uploading to Moodle
Project Description:
The area of a proposed coastal subdivision can be found in figure 1. This is coupled with a topographical map as well as the soil map for the area.
Task:
Your task is to complete the erosion and sediment control plan for this subdivision according to the four following headings.
1. Estimate of sediment loss (USLE) (10 marks)
•Assume a 6-hour 2-year storm event of 25 mm
•For the rest of the factors make your best assumptions (give reasons for your assumptions)
2. Principles to minimise sediment discharge from the site – ensure this relates to your site. (10 marks)
3.Erosion control and sediment control methods (10 marks)
4.Heavy rainfall response and contingency measures (5 marks)
You do not need to produce any technical design maps (hand drawn are fine if you wish to use any).
Moodle will hold the following extra resources that you will find helpful:
– Erosion and sediment control plan guidelines (Waikato and Wellington)
– Principles of erosion and sediment control guidelines (Waikato, Wellington and Christchurch)
– Estimating sediment yield loss (Auckland)
– Example Auckland Retirement Village
– Example Overseas use of the USLE
