Karl Marx was the first to originate the philosophy of Communism. He believed that Capitalism exploited the workers and created a large gap between the richest and poorest citizens (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2022). According to Marx, the way to correct this imbalance was to create a classless society in which the workers owned the means of production. There are a variety of reasons the public would have found the idea of Communism enticing. One draw is the patriotic notion that this form of ruling would be a way of reforming society by eliminating the control of exploitative colonialism (Duiker, 2015). Additionally, “For those who had lost their faith in traditional religion, communism often served as a new secular ideology, dealing not with the hereafter but with the here and now” (Duiker, 2015, p. 106). According to History (2018), the first communist government was implemented by Vladimir Lenin when he seized power during Russia’s October Revolution. Lenin nationalized manufacturing and industry throughout Russia and allocated surplus grain to feed his Red Army. This new state-owned economy had a catastrophic impact on both industrial and agricultural output. An estimated five million Russians died of famine in 1921 (History, 2018).
