Read both versions intently and try to work out to what extent the ideal of female heroism in ‘The Rape of the
Lock’ is offered to us in any kind of serious, aspirational way, or whether, as readers, we feel we have to
recognise some insufficiency in its worldview, similar to those we are invited to detect elsewhere in the poem’s
depiction of modern manners and social conventions
