During the colonial period in Latin America (Latinoamérica) 1492-1810, there was a racial ideology being institutionalized In “Las pinturas de castas” The Caste Paintings or Genre Paintings. These paintings were to determine how close of being (Iberico) European Christian the person is. The more Spaniard a person has in their blood the “better person” he/she is, and consequently could escalate higher socially speaking. This racial conception was imposed in all Latin America, The Philippines, Africa and all the territories colonized by Spain during this period. Furthermore, this racist ideology during the colonial period helped make invisible the diversity of cultures in the Americas specially the Afrolatinos. Nowadays, in México for example, during the recent Census 95.5% of the population recorded no ties with black ancestry.
