Assessment (Individual Report)

Question

You have been presented with the most streamed Spotify songs of 2023. The dataset is uploaded on Moodle for reference (Spotify 2023.xlsx). For this coursework, consider yourself as an analyst keen to deep dive and apply your analytical skills to develop greater insights from the data to support decision-making in the music industry. Please create a report containing:

  • Music analysis: Explore patterns in audio features to understand trends and preferences in popular songs.
  • Platform comparison: Compare the song’s popularity across different music platforms.
  • Artist impact: Analyse how artist involvement and attributes relate to a song’s success.
  • Temporal trends: Identify any shifts in music attributes and preferences over time.
  • Cross-platform presence: Investigate how songs perform across different streaming services.

You may use any set of methodologies you prefer. Please note that your choices need to be justified, and all details about your work and relevant findings must be explained in the report.

At least two types of analytics are required. Below are some suggestions:

  • Descriptive analytics. For example, you can use the methods introduced in this module to describe your dataset, plots, graphs, descriptive metrics, and correlational analysis.
  • Predictive analytics. Build predictive/machine learning models as appropriate to generate insights from the data set, develop hypotheses and validate them using predictive analytics techniques.
