After reading chapters 4 and 5 in The Devil’s Historians, please answer the following questions in a few paragraphs each:
1. Why has the medieval past been so appealing to white supremacist groups? Provide some specific examples of how these groups (in the past AND present) have distorted the Middle Ages to support their ideas, and contrast this with how medieval historians understand racial diversity during this period.
2. Define the “myth of chivalry” and explain how this medievalist concept has been used to justify traditional (patriarchal) gender roles. Then provide some examples of queer sexuality that existed during the Middle Ages.
