The relationship between culture, place, and crime

The relationship between culture, place, and crime has a long history in criminology and criminal
justice. Sometimes the place itself is the focus, such as in Shaw and McKay’s work. In other research,
subcultures whose values favor deviant activity are the focus when such a subculture arises in a particular
area or community or workplace.
Although many theories proceed from the empirical observation that there is a definite
relationship between subcultures, place, and criminal activity, they do not all agree on exactly why.
Based on your class readings, explain the relationship of culture, place and crime. First, choose a
particular “place” (preferably in NYC) and describe it. Keep the description brief. Next, explain a theory of crime that
explains why that place gives rise to a deviant subculture. Base this description and explanation on the
theories of crime we have covered in class, not any outside research.
Finally, what are the implications of this explanation of subcultural crime on criminal sentencing?
If a person who is a member of the deviant subculture commits a criminal act, what is the purpose of
punishing that person?
