In March 2020, the federal government designated farmworkers as essential workers. However, being
classified as essential workers, it did not protect them from climate change crisis, such as the burning fires in
CA and exposure to the COVID-19 virus. Are issues of social marginalization associated with racism, extreme
income inequality, and additional structural disparities responsible for farmworkers not getting the needed
workplace protections? In California, there are about 90 percent of farmworkers born outside the United States,
mostly in Mexico and Central America. It is estimated that more than half of those workers are undocumented
