Surrealists believed that the unconscious was the source of true artistic genius, and that their work depended upon having the ability “to tap into the raw impulses, desires, and fears that Freud claimed were seated in the unconscious”. Surrealism was very much based on Freudian psychology, leading to the perception of the female form as an object of artistic expression, leading often to a stereotypical interpretation of the female, eventually referred to in artistic terms as the “Male Gaze.” we will discuss this further a bit later.
