To work with diverse populations, law enforcement professionals must be aware of areas of concern that are specific to the populations they serve. Law enforcement professionals also must consider and adopt appropriate styles of interaction for each of those populations. Officers who acquire the necessary skills specific to working with a particular population may become more sensitive to the needs of that population, which in turn may lead to better community relationships. Forensic psychology professionals are instrumental when it comes to teaching these types of interactional skills to law enforcement.
For law enforcement, developing active community strategies and initiatives aimed at increasing their legitimacy and public trust, reducing crime, and minimizing risks to the lives they protect is extremely important. Forensic psychology professionals can help educate officers and enhance their cultural competence so they can successfully establish genuine partnerships with the communities they serve.
