A DNP is a Doctor of Nursing Practice. The main difference is that with a DNP they are focused more on clinical practice while the PhD is research based. DNP is a good path for nurses who have career goals to enhance their clinical practice and are MSN prepared. The PhD path would be beneficial for the nurse wanting to be in a leadership and research type position. With a PhD the nurse is using a lot of evidenced based practice to come up with policies and procedures. Their goals is to improve patient outcomes with research findings. The DNP curriculum would work on a capstone project to enhance the clinical setting for a patient. The PhD curriculum includes more research and a teaching opportunity without patient clinical hours (Androus, 2020).
If I was going to further pursue an advanced degree after my bachelor’s in nursing science I would probably go with the PhD because I am more intrigued behind the research aspect of evidence based care. I also like teaching and that clinical hours aren’t required.
