TRADE, GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT Assessment 2 (Essay) 70% of the Module Mark Task: You will need to choose from one of the following essays Essay 1 Compare and contrast the competing views about the goals of development policy regarding the relationship between an equitable distribution of resources and rapid economic growth promotion. Essay 2 Critically assess the lessons that appear to have been learned from the critique of the Washington Consensus and critically evaluate the main tasks at both the national and international level that need to be undertaken if globalisation is to work in such a way as to build “an inclusive world economy”. Essay 3 Critically evaluate the range of theories that seek to explain the impact of globalization on growth and development of less developed countries and assess the main challenges in trying to achieve “inclusive” globalisation. Essay 4 Critically examine and analyse the sources of market failures that small holder farmers producing primary commodities face in both producing and selling their output. Evaluate the range of policies that can be implemented to solve these problems. Essay 5 Compare and contrast the relative role that institutions and markets have played in the growth strategies of three successful developing countries. Each student will be required to: 1. Write an essay of 3,000 words. 2. Ensure the essay is properly referenced with a complete and properly set out bibliography, and endnotes/footnotes where required. It is vital that your essay has an accurate bibliography and that you use a range of the recommended reading given for the topic 3. Ensure the essay includes a wordage figure at the top of the first page of the essay. Note the wordage figure does not include material in endnotes/footnotes. 4. Make sure the essay does not include any appendices. 5. Submit the essay on time. If the essay is submitted late the normal penalties will apply). The tutor will deduct marks if an essay is submitted: * With more/less than 3,000 (+/-10%) words * Without proper referencing and / or bibliography Aims The aims of the individual essay are for the student to: – Achieve a mastery of key concepts and theoretical perspectives – Develop the ability to apply concepts and theoretical perspectives to policy problems Appreciate conflicting perspectives on economic issues and to be able to explain them fairly and succinctly – Develop skills of drafting, editing and re-drafting a document to meet a clearly defined word limit Develop good academic techniques with regard to referencing, endnotes/footnotes and bibliographies.
