disaster are each related to renewal, resilience, and post-traumatic growth after a
disaster.

Recovery from trauma can be defined as the absence of post-traumatic stress symptoms and or
a return two functioning recovery is a process of adjusting or adapting to the destablishing
Event over an extended period of time. Recovery can be an outcome, a process, a baseline we
return to, or an improved state of living after trauma. Following research conducted in Victoria
after the 2009 black Saturday bushfires got our participants, we prefer the term renewal to
describe this gradually improved state of living and the measure of some degree of stability to
be the development of a new normal.
Recovery implies that things had gone back to where they were when in fact, as our
respondents noted, this can never happen. For them, the measure of some degree of
adaptation was the capacity to operate capably in their new social, economic and physical
environment.
This has implications for social workers who can assist people and communities to re-vision
their future, to adapt to a new reality, and build resilience.
Resilience can be viewed as the capacity to bounce forward rather than bounce back. capacity
of people and communities to adapt and transform following an event that causes social,
political and environmental change. innkeeping with the notion of a new normal, resilience can
be viewed as the capacity to bounce forward rather than bounce back.
This process implies the building of the capacity to positively adapt to the new reality of
community and place in the face of trauma. Achieving resilience is very much dependent on
feeling safe and on having access to the resources and knowledge that can assist people to
adapt in a positively way.
