Task
Your task is to write a response to each of the following prompts for the story “The Penthouse” by Andrew Holleran, they are on specific aspects of fiction:
A dialogue that helps “you” better understand a situation or a problem in the story (350-400 words; 10 points).
A character that stands out “to you” as important to the story, regardless of whether it is major or minor (350-400 words; 10 points).
In each of your two responses, see that A) you explain your point clearly, and B) you quote and cite your source, which is the story, 1-2 times to provide evidence of your claim.
Note: If you write on different aspects, you may lose many, most, or all of the points on the assignment, depending on how much damage your irrelevant response has caused.
If you are not sure what dialogue and/or character means, look the term up in any English dictionary of literary terms.
Note: In your responses to this assignment, write the number of the prompt (1 and 2) followed by your response to it. A response that does not have its proper number runs the risk of being misread and with that, losing the points available on it.
A Note on Quoting
Your quote is expected to be effective to provide strong evidence of your claim; it should be introduced smoothly into the discussion, not thrown into it; it should not be a repetition of what you say in your own words; and it should be relevant to the discussion.
If you quote once in a response, the length of your quote should be somewhere between 10% and 15% of the total word count of the response.
If you quote twice in a response, the length of your quote should be somewhere between 5% and 10% of the total word count of the response.
A response that has ineffective quotes could lose up to 20% of the response grade.
A response that does not have a quote at all automatically loses 20% of the response grade.
