Introduction: The 1741 Slave Conspiracy is one of the most complex and troubling moments in New York’s history (just like the 1712 Slave Rebellion). Your task is to begin with the New York Documentary Film, which provides you a rough overview of the event, and then read Plaag’s “New York’s Conspiracy,” 275-299. These two give you a general sense of what happened in the winter and spring of 1741. Then turn your attention to three of the trials that are part of the 1741 Slave Conspiracy (Larceny, Arson, Conspiracy). These documents are rough transcripts of the trial –some of the only records we have detailing the lives of enslaved women in early New York.
