Many people say that organizational behavior (OB) is the “soft” part of business, implying that it’s an easy subject and not as hard as the technical and statistical analysis of finance and business forecasting. However, others say that “people” are much more complicated than numbers. What is your take on this? What does this imply for the study of OB and the role of interpersonal skills in management?
2. The textbook says that it is important for managers to combine “intuition” with the systematic study of organizational behavior and management, including evidence-based management. Why is this important? How does this differ from the idea that management is “common sense”?
3. In chapter 2, the textbook recognizes that diversity in organizations can both hurt and help performance in groups and organizations. This may mean that diversity in the workplace has to be managed. Describe a couple of diversity management strategies mentioned in the book. In your view, what are likely to be the major components of a diversity management strategy or program that is successful?
4. Provide an assessment of your (current or past) workplace based on Goffee & Jones ideas six virtues of the “best workplaces on earth”. Make sure each one of the virtues is presented with detail. (Hint: If you have never been part of a work organization or are feeling creative, try answering this question for a different type of organization you belong to – military group, church, student organization, volunteer group, school, etc. This may be a longer answer than the others to really show your application of the HBR reading)
