What is the learning goal for this assignment? The goal is to figure out what themes are expressed in William Shakespeares Macbeth and how they are revealed through the literary elements in a passage of your choice.

What options do I have? You can choose a passage that resonates with you and connect it to the theme of your choice. What scenes have you found significant or engaging? While creating your Flipgrid recording you have many options of how to present your commentary. For example, you could choose to include your annotated passage next to your image using the whiteboard feature to highlight the elements you explore. The visual options are endless.

How is this assignment relevant to my learning? IB encourages students to notice patterns in the works they study and link them to global topics seen in the world at large. Noticing these patterns leads you to understanding the craft behind the content. IB also wants students to interpret texts in their own way, from their own perspective. Both of these approaches are designed to lead to engaged students who see value in the subject.

Process:

Step 1: Choose a passage of up to 40 lines from Macbeth.

Step 2: Identify the theme in your chosen passage and show how the literary elements present contribute to the development of the theme through an oral analysis of the passage.

Themes weve discussed: Ambition/Power; Good/Evil; Violence/Guilt; Reality/Appearance; Supernatural; Betrayal/Loyalty

Step 3: Develop a thesis statement (based on step 2) and thoroughly annotate your passage with this in mind.

Step 4: Create an outline for your oral commentary. Often starting at the beginning of your passage and working your way to the end will help focus your analysis. In this outline, you should:

Summarize and give context to the passage. Comment on the significance of your passage. (approximately 1 minute)

Comment on the theme youve identified and clearly state your thesis statement. (1-2 minutes)

Focus on the language and techniques and explore the denotation and connotation of words and phrases. A close reading is necessary. Always relate this back to your thesis statement based on your chosen theme. (2-3 minutes)

1. Review your act reflections, questions, groupwork, and in-class activities.

2. Use the 7 IB concepts to guide you in your preparation.

3. Review your annotations and notes.

4. Review the rubric below.

5. Use the thinking routines below to help guide your analysis.

Close reading thinking routine:

1. What does this word, phrase or image denote (mean literally)?

2. What does it connote (mean figuratively, or more broadly)?

3. How does this interpretation shape the meaning of the text as a whole?

Literary device thinking routine:

1. What is the name of this literary device?

2. What is its effect on the text (what does it do, of how does it shape meaning)?

Literary thesis thinking routine:

Through form, the text suggests that content.

o (Content is the idea expressed by the text. Form is how that idea is expressed, either through character, setting or technique).
