We read about and watched videos about women of color and artistic expression. When women of color represent themselves in this way, it can be very different than the stereotypes portrayed by other people about who we are. For this week’s prompt, you’ll need to do a bit of research, and please post a photo or video example of the work you are discussing.
PROMPT
Research a woman artist or performer who creates or represents alternative images for girls and women of color. How does this woman and her work challenge and contest dominant depictions of women’s bodies and their sexuality? How does her work upend mainstream assumptions and stereotypes based on race, ethnicity, class, gender and/or sexuality? How has their work been received by the mainstream media and/ or the public?
Be sure to quote something from Maythee Rojas and refer to at least one of the videos in your response.
