Write a 5-page essay that traces a concept or theme from Early American literature to contemporary American culture.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to illustrate the direct connections between early American culture and beliefs (as reflected in their literature) to contemporary beliefs as reflected by our leaders, the media, pop culture, etc. For example, you might discuss the concept of otherness in Puritan literature and relate that to one of today’s popular religious conservative movements. You could compare the Early Americans’ concept of freedom to today’s ideas of freedom. You might trace the concept of otherness in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and relate that to aspects of otherness demonstrated in today’s culture.
Use specific quotes from your reading assignments AND direct quotes (a minimum of 3) from academic sources. There are a lot of resources available to you in the Web Resources section of the course (found in the “All the Important Stuff” module), so don’t hesitate to look there for assistance. Your essay must be written in MLA format, must include direct quotes from the reading materials and in-text citations, as well as include an extensive Works Cited page (that uses scholarly sources).
