Read one of the interviews below, then write a 500-600 word essay that summarizes and responds to the writer’s perspective; the interview may cover the writer’s use of his or her life experience, attitude toward writing, or struggle to achieve publication. When considering which author to write on, you might want to choose the author who writes the type of work that you enjoy or want to write yourself. And be sure to not be too broad in scope. It will leave to a diluted summary/response.
You must use a balanced variety of quotation integration techniques, such as paraphrases and summaries, as well as direct quotes that include whole, partial, and kernel quotes. Since you are citing from a single online source, you will not have to include parenthetical citations with page numbers, but you must make sure that you have established the rhetorical situation of the piece you have chosen in your brief but concise introduction, which should gently lead your reader to your thesis (highlight/underline your thesis).
Also, be sure to include a Work Cited page in MLA format, but remember that this is NOT a research paper. I do not need you deflecting authority onto other sources; I only need your authority and the primary source your are referencing. Once aptly summarized, what insight can you provide your reader?
Be sure to include a thoughtful conclusion that synthesizes your point but without introducing new ideas or cited material. Don’t just summarize (Yawn!). The conclusion is often the most challenging piece to write. Ever read a great story with a bad ending? Same applies here. Plus, it’ll help you think about how you might go about ending your up-coming short story.
