Task
You are employed in the Finance Division of a large multinational consulting firm. The Director of Foresight has learned that you followed the specialist pathway Carbon Management and Entrepreneurship (CME). Following a brief meeting, she has asked you to prepare a business report scoping out exactly what CME is all about in theory, and how its insights might be applied to the organisation that employs you both.
In particular, she would like to know more about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals, what emissions trading is, and how the climate change discourse is likely to evolve over the short-, medium-, and long-term. She is particularly interested in the commercial opportunities for your mutual employer.
In light of the above, using examples of your choice as well as drawing on theories and concepts from across the module, your task is to provide a report (1000 words +/- 10%) for her with suitable recommendations. In particular, the report should include the following as a minimum:
An outline of the development of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and an awareness of other emerging trading schemes around the world. [25 marks]
Possible consulting opportunities which might arise as a result of engaging with carbon reduction/removal agenda for external clients. [30 marks]
An outline of appropriate measures that the employer might adopt internally to account for GHG emissions and removals. [25 marks]
Suggestions as to how GHG emission reduction might be incorporated into the employer’s risk management function. [10 marks]
The benefits – reputational, financial, regulatory etc. – that might accrue to the employer of a GHG reduction corporate strategy. [10 marks]
