Task Description

Case study

You have recently been contacted by the CEO, Jonathon Briggs, for Itikan, an eCommerce company that sells a variety of items and is looking at expansion. Jonathon is responsible for all departments with a focus on sales, inventory and distribution in Australia. At the moment Jonathon gets data and charts from different departments in different formats and is always having to manipulate data to get answers. He is always interested in sales and profitability but also monitors picking and shipping time, delivery costs and inventory levels to make sure the company is running smoothly. You have been asked to design and create a dashboard that he can use to get a snapshot of the different areas as well as being able to drill down to get more detail from reports. You have been provided a small sample of data (about 1% of the orders in the months of August to October – order numbers and names have been altered for privacy reasons).  He has outlined that he monitors the profit percentage for each month’s orders as that gives an indication about the product pricing.

Assignment task

To complete this task, you will need to do the following:

Step 1: Plan – what are you aiming to deliver and by when.

Step 2: Scope – Think about the purpose/objective of your dashboard. How will the dashboard support decision-making. What are the objectives of the CEO and how does the dashboard link to this? Think about all the measurements that the CEO is interested in and why.

Step 3: Design – What visuals are you going to create and why. Ensure they link back to your objectives. Investigate the data quality and any transformation you will do or recommend. What other data might help?

Step 4: Develop and test – create reports and a dashboard using Power BI that matches your design. Import the datasets into Power BI. Your dashboard should be visually interesting, include between 6-10 visuals or tiles, and have appropriate titles, legends, etc. These tiles should link to more detailed reports. Make sure the dashboard has appropriate filters to allow the CEO to view different data/time scales, etc.

Step 5: Launch – create a video showing your dashboard and teh component reports. Explain the dashboard – why have you decided to do certain things (charts, filters, colours, etc.).

Hints

  1. Create 3 reports for each of the company departments (sales, shipping and inventory). Combine these into an executive dashboard.
  2. Think about your overall colour scheme as well as each tile. Discuss this in the video. 
  3. Use either PowerPoint or Zoom to create your video
  4. Aim to put yourself in the video (a talking head).
