Your boss, the Midwest District HR Director at Bullseye, has invited you to accompany him to Bullseye Headquarters for a pitch he’s making to the Bullseye’s CHRO and her direct reports for a new initiative to support career development with stores and succession planning for mid-level management throughout Bullseye. Your boss believes that Bullseye needs to react to the tightening labor market and implement a ‘Best in Breed’ eHRM application (like Cornerstone) that would assist employees working at the store level and within district offices to better self-manage their careers. You are there to assist with technology and take thorough notes of the feedback he receives. Your boss’s presentation was well-done but at the end he was peppered with many skeptical questions and concerns about the pitch. As you review your notes there seems to be a lot of criticism about the pitch your boss gave. However, he doesn’t seem all that concerned. In the taxi heading back to the airport you ask your boss how he can be so calm when there was so much criticism of his pitch. He chuckles and explains that this is the way Bullseye Headquarters operates and that he expected a long list of issues to come from the meeting. He goes on to say “Now we do a needs analysis that addresses all those questions and everyone at headquarters will be happy to get on board with this initiative.”
