Instructions to learner:

In this assignment you will address how ELC settings are required to support children’s rights.
You will demonstrate your understanding of children’s rights, legislation, regulations, and frameworks in relation to your role as an ELC practitioner, and in relation to the obligations of an ELC service. You will be required to refer to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and to the Child Care Act 1991 (Early Years Services) Regulations 2016.

Introduction (5 marks)

  • Explain the concept of children’s rights and outline the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), its background and articles

Main Body (25 marks)

  • Explain how Irish legislation and Irish social policy is influenced by the UNCRC and promotes the rights of the child. (5 marks) Aistear
  • Discuss the link to Síolta. (5 marks)
  • Describe how the rights of families and children are promoted in an ELC setting. Give four examples and explain how it applies to Aistear and Síolta. (4 x 2.5 marks)
  • Summarise the role of an ELC practitioner to ensure the rights of the child and promote an inclusive practice. (10 marks)
