Historical analysis of cost of capital, dividend policy and capital structure

What do you need to do?

1. Go to “Morningstar Direct” using Murdoch University’s library database
2. Access to financial data of a firm of your choice
3. Analyse financial data as follows:

• Calculate share price using the formula: for at least five years (more is better) and plot the stock prices and comment on the trend. You should exclude those firms from your analysis which does not have reported EPS.
• Compute dividend growth rate using Dividend per share (do not use Total Dividend per share). Try to use maximum available dividend data. Use the following formula to compute dividend growth rate (g): . Plot these growth rates and comment.
• Compute cost of equity using the dividend growth model for at least five years (more is better). Plot these costs of equity, what do you see? Comment.
• Plot the dividend payout ratios. What does the trend imply regarding the firm’s dividend policy?
• Plot the Debt/Equity ratios for at least five years (more is better) and comment on the capital structure of the firm.

The assignment is expected to demonstrate:

• a clear understanding of the topic(s) addressed
• strong analytical skills in evaluating financial data
• the ability to assess and articulate the historical performance of firms
• the capability to compare firm performance and derive meaningful conclusions
• the aptitude to propose actionable recommendations aligned with the objectives of financial management.

How to access Morningstar Direct?

Go to Library

Then click on Databases

Click on A – Z Database Names

Click on M – N

Go to page 2

Then click on “Morningstar Direct”

Then follow the instructions to access the database.

On Morningstar page type ticker symbol of the company you want to analyse in the search box

For example, if you want to analyse Commonwealth Bank Australia, then type ‘CBA’ in the box:

On the Commonwealth Bank of Australia page, click on “KEY METRICS” to get the financial statements.

Use the following link to get the codes of the listed companies (you can also use alternative sources using google).

Additional Information

The word limit for the written report is 2000 words.

The assignment must have an Introduction and a Conclusion in addition to analysis mentioned above.

Please note that, number of firms to be analysed = number of group members in a group

• be typed using Word
• be 1.5 spaced
• use Times New Roman font, size 12.
• have normal margins.

Electronic Assignment Submission

Use the submission link in Assessment section submit the following files:

• Written report in word document
• Excel or word (if screenshots are taken) file containing the data used in event study.
• Group Project Plan

Use a unique filename which follows the convention: Unit Code_AssignTJ_26_ID, where TJ_26 stands for January Trimester 2026. For example, BUS286_AssignTJ_26_12345678, where 12345678 is the student ID of the student submitting the BUS286 TJ 2026 assignment.
