More details;
People didn’t know what they were doing when the second half of the of the 20th century started. There had been massive upheaval in the social order.
Firstly, the extremes of ideological politics.
Secondly, the collapse of religion, the biological revolution of birth control and hygiene
Thirdly, the horrors of worldwide war
Also, screaming technological advancement left people without a clue what the hell was going on. On the other hand, people were smarter, richer, and more independent… They needed smarter, richer, music, but the classical world had long left the general public behind. There was a hole in the middle of the culture – a space for more sophisticated popular music.
Dylan did what many of the greatest pop artists have done. He used the fundamental human systems of the finer arts — religious imagery, literary technique, and mythological symbolism — to clarify the mechanisms of the world and the people in it at a time of transformation.
How can this new environment make sense to us?
Enter Robert Zimmerman.
Dylan had the right mind, with the right interests, at the right place, at the right time. He brought the sophistication of classical literature to a music genre that had always been a bit shallow.
Given the extra cash around in the early 60s, people were reading more, learning more, and asking more questions. God was dead, women were finally breaking free, people could afford refrigerators, the horror of political war was on television, and the cars were fast… Now what? The world of pop-culture needed a more intelligent literary voice, one that returned to the big existential questions. What should I dedicate my life to? Who is important to me? What is the meaning of my pain? Is life worth living?
