In this topic, you will study bipolar disorders and select impulse control disorders. Disturbances involving biological, neurobiological, and psychological influences will be presented. You will learn about the mood, behaviors, thought content, and cognitive function during acute mania. Outcomes identification for each phase of mania will be explored as well as planning and implementation of the nursing process. Pharmacological and biological therapies will be presented.
Objectives:
- Examine the psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual influences; signs and symptoms; age-related considerations; and evidence-based assessments related to bipolar and impulse control disorders across the life span.
- Utilize the nursing process to develop, implement, and evaluate a client-centered plan of care for clients with bipolar disorders or alternations in impulse control.
- Discuss the classifications, therapeutic effects, major adverse effects, client and family teaching, and nursing considerations of medications used to reduce the risks associated with acute mania and maintain mood stability.
- Utilize therapeutic communication with clients who are experiencing mood instability or decreased impulse control.
- Implement safety measures to reduce the risks associated with the client’s experience of acute mania or decreased impulse control.
