Your op-ed should be between 750 and 1000 words in length. It has to be opinionated. It’s your opinion. However, it should have broader implications and you have to support it with valid research and sources. Your piece must focus on one point rather than a discourse on the entire woes of sports. Op-eds are usually current; this means you address just one current topic that needs attention. Make your main point in the first paragraph of your opinion piece so the reader knows up-front why you are writing this and why they would want to read it. Cite only primary sources and include a bibliography. I will fact-check submissions, but I cannot do it if you don’t give me the sources. Keep sentences short and concise. Give your op-ed a strong ending that sums up your position succinctly. Avoid using jargon when possible. Most of all, avoid direct quotes! The assignment is due on Saturday, March 27, at 11:59 pm. You have one chance to revise your op-ed – this is optional! The revised op-ed, if you choose to do it, is due on Saturday, April 10, at 11:59 pm. Delay in submission with no documentation of an excused absence carries a penalty of 50% of maximum possible grade after 24 hours; beyond that, it will automatically receive a zero. Please give yourself plenty of time to identify your topic and supporting research/sources and write the op-ed. If you’re having issues understanding what is expected from you, talk to me right away — do not wait until it is too late!
